Very organized and detailed. I’m surprised all of this information can fit easily into one little book!
Can you help me be a better DJ? (dance music)?
Intentions: Dj as a hobby, mix music, maybe DJ small house parties, create mix cd’s and such…First, let’s talk equipment. I currently have:numark 2 channel mixerdenon dual cd player2 numark turntablesa pair of headphonesa crown amp2 yamaha speakersSorry, I don’t New Denon Dj Cd Players have the exact model specs because I’m at work… anyway… Everything is about 6-7 years old but they work great. Is there anything I should upgrade ASAP, or anything I should get that I don’t have?Pretty much all I can do is beatmatch, by ear, some tracks together and call it a “mix”. I would like to be able to do more, but I’m not really sure how to get started, or what I need.Lastly, I only recently got back into the techno scene. I’m totally lost as to what music is hot right now. If someone could point me in the dirrection as to where to find the hottest new club tracks, I would be very greatful.

Bought this for the score to “Such a Night” which is in the index. Unfortunately they neglected to put the score anywhere in the book. There’s lots of other things to learn and play, but if you’re looking for that specific song, you’ll be disappointed.

Obviously you don’t get here an easy “Dr. John for Dummies” just because this series of books is not made for the regular weekend piano-player. It is supposed to introduce the N’Awlins style of piano playing for the skilled blues/classical/something else pianist.
I’ve got the VHS versions and well before I got those I managed to learn some Dr. John’s stuff by ear, like the “Honey Dripper” (in G, left hand boogie 5ths/6ths pattern) and I found it quite useful when I was learning his version of “Good Night, Irene” because I just couldn’t figure out exactly what the left hand was doing, so I watched the video a couple times to get the left hand part and a couple more to get the right hand licks and it was done. Of course he won’t play everything here in half-tempo and tell you to add a crushing f# to your g octave so it’ll sound more Orleans. Hello, he’s Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John the Nighttripper, he isn’t your piano teacher.
Well, you should get this if you are a Dr. John fan or if you are really into blues piano, but don’t think this will make you a Professor Longhair. This is an aid, not a pair of crutches.

I am fairly accomplished pianist and can play some blues. i bought this book because Dr John is such a master at it in so many ways. This book is like so many music “how to” books i bought growing up. It is COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY INACCURATE. i have a great ear better than i can execute and i can safely say there are more things wrong than right. Perhaps another way of saying it is that there are so many things different on the written page than on the cd. HOW CAN YOU SELL A BOOK CLAIMING TO DEMONSTRATE HOW TO DO SOMETHING AND GIVE YOU A LESSON FILLED WITH THINGS THAT ARENT WHAT YOURE LEARNING??? the first piece comes closest to his playing. its also easiest and the one youll care about least. I called both publishers. Homespun told me no one ever complained about it. well, so what! Dr John is complicated enough. he plays fast. theres many things in the inbetween. No wonder no one figured it out. People probably gave up and figured they werent good enough. Homespun was kind about it but they did not do the transcription, Hal Leonard music did. Hal Leonard never even responded to emails and a letter. Listen to his version of Frankie and Johnny see what they “transcribe” (if you could call it that) and youll think it belongs to a different cd. I managed to figure out what he was playing and therefore attained some benefit but i could have bought any cd of his and done that.
if you want to learn new orleans style piano avoid this book.
