This Little Mixer can give you the best type of effects, mixing, and recoring in the ipod. Recording is studio quality. The only disadvantage in recording is that you can’t edit the tracks separately. It is already mixed after recording. But I love it. All my friends have bought one per my recommendation. Highly recommended for musicians.

What is a good way to turn your laptop into a recording studio?
I am a singer + acoustic guitar player. I am looking for a solution for digital recording. I do not Recording Studio Mixers have any recording gear at this point. I know I will likely need mics and perhaps a small mixer, but would the community mind letting me know their suggestion for an affordable setup? I just want to be able to record myself playing and singing at the same time. Nothing too expensive please. I may have about $500 to work with.

I baught purchased this mixer years ago from Guitar Center to record my band. It did a really good job. For the price and quality, it’s just good!

  2. Karlsson Says:

I like it, I’d take it everywhere I go. The cool thing about this mixer is it has phantom power built in, small enough to store or place any where. I like it a lot.

I have had the Behringer XENYX 802 for about 6 months now, and it has done everything that I’ve wanted. I mainly use it to record guitar, but I’ve used it for various other things as well. I hook it up to my laptop via a Behringer UCA 202, and it works perfectly.
The only problem I had with it was when I first got it, it kept freezing and blasting a loud buzzing sound. The reason why it did this was because the power wasn’t plugged into the back of it all the way, once I figured that out it never did it again.
Very good product, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to start a “mini-recording studio”.

  4. Lange Says:

I’m looking forward to my future recordings using the 802 – It is always fun to have a new toy! Highly recommended piece of equipment that is nice value for the cost.I was looking for a low cost mixer to use with my other recorder and did a little research on the leading brands. Just looking at it with it’s inputs, number of controls, I would have guessed it cost close to a couple hundred bucks. Imagine my surprise when, after reading the positive reviews, that I discovered this thing was only ! I bought it immediately and, right out of the box, it did exactly everything I was expecting it to – this is a truly nice little piece of equipment for getting the recording control and flexibility that is not inherent on some of the other models.

I was looking to upgrade my previous Behringer mixer of 6 years. I did some research and was eye balling a Yamaha usb mixer. I went to my local music store for the Yamaha and none were in stock. Debating whether I should in-store order the Yamaha the sales rep asked me what I was looking for in a mixer and I replied “Better quality than my Behringer” He then told me about Mackie’s top notch quality. Now I’ve been to a couple of professional studios that have Mackie and a recording class I took in College used them, It never occurred to me that I could afford one for my home studio. The Mackie 802-VLZ3 fit within my budget so I bought it, knowing I’d return it if I wasn’t satisfied.

I brought it home hooked it up and listened to music 2 hours straight, extremely pleased with the quality and low noise of this unit. Mabye it was the difference from my old mixer that wowed me but it was definitely worth the 2hundred I spent. I highly recommend a great pair of studio quality head phones or monitors to accompany this mixer if you don’t have already. It also comes with a free ‘Tracktion’ recording software.

Now if only they can have usb connectivity for the same price!

  6. Dunn Says:

I am relatively new to professional audio with my budding voice-over operation and small home recording studio. I read about a variety of mixers. There are many models and most do essentially the same things. What sold me (other than the extensive feature list) was a YouTube video in which Mackie engineers tortured the 802-VLZ3 and several other makes of similar smaller mixers. When the 802-VLZ3 survived being driven over by a Jeep and the others didn’t, I was sold. For my home studio, the 802-VLZ3 has plenty of inputs and capabilities. The mike preamp is virtually noise-free. The controls are solid and smooth. The connectors are robust and solid. Everything has a solid feel. It’s quality through and through. In the few months that I’ve used the mixer I have enjoyed trouble-free operation. I have yet to exceed its capabilities and my recordings come out great. This Mackie mixer is a solid performer and a great first mixer for the home recording newbie.

  7. Bicknell Says:

The mixer is nice and solidly built and seems to work good. I have never
used a mixer before so some of the functions were a little confusing by reading the manual.

  8. Heidelberg Says:

I have owned this mixer for a little over 6 months and could not be more pleased. The sound quality, inclusion of two high quality phantom power inputs, and configurability make this ideal for podcasting. This mixer has a small footprint considering the number of inputs it can handle and feels like a quality piece of gear. All controls have a firm feel.

There is no analog level meter, which keeps the cost and size of the unit down. However, there is a 5 segment LED that approximates input levels and signals red on clipping. Essentially this is all that is really needed and works quite well. If you record into software, that will give more precise levels if needed.

The cost of the unit is such that for most it leaves the budget available for a decent quality condenser mike which is just as essential, if not more so, for quality audio recording.

While the larger Xenyx models do include a built-in USB interface for immediate connection to a computer, this mixer does not. However, you can pick up either a USB or Firewire interface separately and inexpensively. I use the Behringer FCA202 firewire interface which works great and is also priced for tight budgets.

The signal path, described in the user guide with a diagram, is simple yet versatile. It is possible to interface to an external effects processor and also send a separate mix for control room or tape out purposes.

Most critical, as Behringer promises, the inputs are very clean. This value oriented mixer offers everything needed for basic recording,e.g. podcasting, with quality and durability.

  9. Galpert Says:

I have been looking for a mixer for my home studio. I use it to produce audio programming for a radio station.

I checked several others along with this. I heard good reviews on Mackie products. I have seen them in action and I believe they are quite good. However, after a comparison, the Behringer is of equal quality with more features for a lower price. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing to mix several aux sources along with microphones.

  10. Kruse Says:

Well i recieved this board about 5 months ago and never could get the usb drivers to work..i could never get the sound playback from the usb interface to work with any computer..I contacted behringer they have updates for the asio drivers but they never worked..So if your planning on buying this board for usb reasons dont waste your money…

  11. Freed Says:

    Great mixer.
I got it immediately after I purchased it.
It works great and I’m happy with it.

  12. Mullich Says:

I use this mixing board every week for practice. I can record to my computer while simultaneously recording to an ipod.
I have never had an issue with this alesis, Highly recommended for home digital recording. The built in effects processor is ideal for live recording as well. Definitely a great product!

  13. Allegrucci Says:

Our church purchased this board about 1.5 years ago. We use the board for mic’ing singers and speakers, and also use the iPod feature for recording to an iPod. This system has worked flawlessly until now. Over a year later the iPod connector no longer recognizes the iPod, so we can not play or record from the iPod. Occasionally, if we dust off the connector, or perhaps wiggle it a bit, it’ll recognize the iPod for a short time (i.e. 5 minutes).

Without this problem I could highly recommend the device, and hopefully this is just a malfunction with our unit, but regardless parts shouldn’t become defective this early.

  14. Fay Says:

I purchased this item about a year ago. It remained in the box until May, when I had a friend unpack it and check it out for me. We now use it on a regular basis…both as a mixer and to record our meetings to an iPod.

I had considered getting the Belkin TuneStudio Portable Digital Multitrack Recorder, but opted for the Alesis because it has 8 rather than 4 inputs. Little did I know that we would be able to effectively turn those 8 inputs into 16! And the degree of control over each individual input is phenomenal.

The size makes the Alesis a little “less portable” than what I had originally wanted, but that has been a total non-issue for us. The extra capacity makes this a wonderful choice.

    I highly recommend this product!

  15. Ireland Says:

This thing really is useful. I started using one as a simple headphone/monitor control for a DAW here and it sits nicely by the computer keyboard. I’ve since bought a second one and modded the first with some opamp swaps and a less-bright orange power LED (as noted by another reviewer). I also had coincidentally added rubber feet to both of mine to handle that sliding around issue.

Another reviewer mentioned the mic pre going full blast at the very end of the trim knob range. Both mine have this to a degree, but one is way more pronounced. The pot itself is a good part of it (I swapped pots between the two), but it may be the circuit as well. I haven’t tried to resolve that yet and it isn’t that big of a deal here.

Wishes– Phantom power as others have mentioned. A single clean pre which could also do condensers would be great. Also, there is no easy way to grab the mic signal without including the full mix. A pre-fader direct out for the mic channel, or an insert jack which could be used like that would make it a lot more useful for tracking vocals and stuff where you needed the rest of the mixer for DAW/monitor duty. BTW- I don’t believe there’s a newer 502 with phantom as mentioned in another review. He may be thinking of the 802. I bought one of those a few days ago too. Seems nice too, but there’s nothing like the compact size of that smaller one.

    Take Care

PS- Looks like my first one was bought used in 2007. The second was within a year of that and they’re in use most of the day, so I guess they’ve had ample time to break if they were going to. ;)

**Edit** After some fishing around, it looks like there actually may be some new modded version of this thing with phantom power, but I can’t find any hard proof of it on their site, and the downloadable docs and spec sheets look the same as always. Some users mention a sticker added to newer boxes stating “Now with phantom power!”, but it sounds as if there is no way to disable it or know that it’s on as with the larger models. Someone else mentioned that it only measured 30vDC, but that may not be a problem. If it really has any, good for B!

Exactly what you need if you want flexibility of your audio needs, plug your mics, players, computer, TV and this will deliver.

  17. Kelley Says:

Can’t ask for more, I can turn my home theater into a karaoke or video conference center with no trouble

  18. Jimenez Says:

needed a mixer for my nady wireless mike. researched on amazon and got this little amazing product. had a party for my daughter’s 18th birthday and the quality of my audio system was great. i just hooked my stereo amplifier to the behringer 502 mixer, plug the wireless mike and mp3 player and the party really rocked. my brother and friends were amazed by the sound and price of such a small set-up. better than hiring a dj as one friend suggested.
